Why Choose Us?

While there will always be those who prefer their clothing 100% cotton, their bread 100% wheat, and their Cocker Spaniel 100% Cocker Spaniel; the advent of Designer Dogs has brought a whole new option to the table.

Designer dogs have come a long way from the mutts and mongrels that we used to term them. Most breeders accept the fact that this market is not going away, and no one can deny the sheer cuteness of these new pup breeds. Breed manipulation started for people with allergies to dogs. Most are allergic to the dander shed from the dogs' coat, not the actual hair. While all dogs shed hair (some far less than others) a few breeds do not seem to shed the dreaded dander or allergens. Among these breeds are: Poodles, Bichon Frise, Schnauzer, and Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier. By mixing a dame or sire of one of these breeds, the allergens appear to be cut down severely. With this in mind, breeders began experimenting for the right mix.

Viola, the Yorkie-poo ( Mixing the Cocker Spaniel with the Poodle created this beautiful mix weighing in at about 15-25lbs. With a curlier, low-shedding coat and fewer ear problems (prone to Cocker Spaniels), these little pups seemed to be the best of both worlds. One word of caution with any designer breeds; look for first generation only. In other words, these should be purebred Cocker to purebred Poodle for best genetic results. This combination tends to bring out the dominant (good) genes of both parents. However, breeding a Cockapoo to Cockapoo tends to bring out recessive (bad) genes of both parents. You should NEVER breed (or purchase) a pup bred brother to sister.

Some other popular designer dog breeds include: YorkiePoo (Yorkshire Terrier x Poodle), BichonPoo (Bichon Frise x Poodle), Schnoodle (Schnauzer x Poodle), Puggle (Pug x Beagle), ShihPoo (ShihTsu x Poodle), LhasaPoo (Lhasa Apso x Poodle), MaltePoo (Maltese x Poodle), PomPoo (Pomeranian x Poodle), and Teddy Bear (ShihTsu x Bichon). These are just a few of the most popular small breeds. Large breed designer dogs include the Labradoodle (Labrador Retriever x Standard Poodle), and Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever x Standard Poodle). The larger breeds originated for use as seeing eye dogs for the sight impaired with allergies.

The designer dog breeds have been a bonus to the breeding community, now only needing one purebred of a certain breed and one purebred of another. It is immediately known that these two dogs are not related in any way, a fact often hard to prove with purebreds looking identical. Clean bloodlines are essential to the breeding process for obvious genetic reasons. You must still do your homework on the breeder you chose.

Checking out breeders is crucial when buying any pup, but even more so if you chose a purebred. Do your homework on both the breed you are looking at as well as the breeder. You will not be able to recognize genetic flaws unless you have seen a good representation of the breed. Not all pups will be show dogs, but all should look like the breed they are labeled. Even as small pups, with height and weight excluded, you should see the breed characteristics in them. For example, Cocker Spaniels should have long ears, and a wide rounded snout. Maltese should be very small and always purewhite. Most importantly, get a health guarantee for any puppy that you adopt. A veterinarian can look your pup over completely and ensure no genetic defects are present.
